Research Project

Mathematics for Evolutionary Therapy

Evolutionary therapy is a therapeutic approach based on the concept of dynamically adapting treatment to the changing characteristics of a tumor or a microbial infection. Rather than following a fixed therapeutic protocol, this strategy involves modifying treatments in response to disease evolution, which often develops resistance mechanisms over time. The central idea is to anticipate and address tumor evolution by proactively adjusting therapies in order to prevent or counteract drug resistance. This approach requires the use of mathematical and numerical models to predict and guide treatment adaptations, based on clinical data and the evolutionary behavior of the tumor. The ultimate goal is to achieve long-term control of tumor growth, improving treatment outcomes compared to traditional therapies. The aim of the project is to analyze the use of mathematical and numerical models to support therapeutic decision-making for selected tumors or microbial diseases. Possible extensions also include applications of evolutionary therapy to plant disease treatment.
