Continuation Methods for Nonlinear Problems

Course

Lecturer:
Jan Sieber (University of Exeter)

Board Contact:
Dimitri Breda

SSD: MATH-05/A

CFU: 3 CFU + assignment: 2 CFU

Period: November–December 2025

Lessons / Hours: 14 hours

Program:

The school will introduce approaches to treatment of nonlinear problems such as systems of algebraic equations or discretizations of differential equations that go beyond ready-to-use bifurcation analysis tools. We will present some underlying theory for formulating and solving nonlinear systems. The school will also include practical sessions were participants have time to explore the use of COCO (sourceforge.net/projects/coco) with support. The course is suitable for students beyond mathematicians, e.g., physicists and engineers, and in general those who deal with nonlinear problems in their activities. Indeed, participants are encouraged to bring nonlinear problems relevant to their research.

Prerequisites: Basic background on ordinary differential equations
