Structured Population Models and Quantitative Approaches in Biology and Medicine

Course

Lecturer:
Tyler Cassidy (University of  Leeds)

Board Contact:
Rossana Vermiglio

SSD: MATH-05/A Numerical Analysis

CFU: 3 CFU + assignment 2 CFU

Period: March 30th – April 24, 2026

Lessons / Hours: 12 hours (8 theoretical, 4 practical), 4 or 6 lectures

Program:

The lectures are intended for students interested in learning how quantitative methods and mathematical modelling can be used to address questions in biology and medicine.

The course will focus on physiologically structured population models, typically formulated as PDEs or delay differential equations, to study treatment response and drug resistance at the within-host scale using a combination of clinical trial and in vitro experimental data.

We will discuss analytical and numerical methods that facilitate the use of these dynamical systems in understanding  and quantifying the role of intra-patient heterogeneity in driving treatment response. The course will include a tutorial on using nonlinear mixed effects modelling, implemented in Monolix, for parameter estimation of models.

Verification: Seminar or practical activity

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of numerical methods for differential equations
