Optimization and Characterization of the Divergent pointing mode for the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) for Transient Studies

The current generation of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) has been a great success, which confirms the value of gamma-ray astronomy for contemporary astrophysics. This subject area focuses on energies between 50 GeV and hundreds of TeV, which are at the upper end of the electromagnetic spectrum. The Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), which is currently under construction, is the most advanced ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy at very high energies. It will outperform its predecessors in every way, including energy range, sensitivity, field of view, and angular resolution.

This project is dedicated to optimizing divergent configurations and divergent mode analysis for the CTAO as well as studying the performance of this mode for different array configurations and number of telescopes, in order to investigate whether the performance is competitive in comparison to the normal pointing mode. We are particularly interested in testing the performance of the divergent pointing for the transient sources. We will optimize the Divergent pointing ability to cover more complex sky patterns, such as coverage of a large area of the sky obtained from the region of maximum probability in the direction of arrival of gravitational waves (GW) or to do a scan of the large “error boxes” such as those obtained by instruments dedicated to the study of GRB extension.
