Research Project
Artificial Intelligence for Decision Support in Pathology
The main objective of the research project deals with the study of methodologies and techniques for decision support in Pathology.
The development of digital pathology, thanks to microscopy images and the most recent gigabyte-sized Whole-Slide Images (WSI), offers an opportunity to extract richer insights from histological samples. This is made possible through advanced image analysis techniques and the recent developments of Deep Learning. Particularly, the application of Convolutional Neural Networks and the innovative Vision Transformers enables a thorough and comprehensive exploration for in-depth image analysis.
Thus, starting from an analysis of histopathological images (i.e., the different types, the collection process, storage, and labeling by pathologists, and the different Artificial Intelligence systems and techniques that can be applied to them) and the understanding of the various phases of the pathologists’ work, the goal is not only to develop Artificial Intelligence systems and techniques that can carry out the tasks of tissue segmentation and classification but also to develop a methodology that can integrate image analysis models within pathology information systems.
