General advice
Non-European Union students residing abroad need to apply to the Italy Embassy or Consulate in their country of residence. On completion of pre-enrolment procedures, a VISA TO ENTER Italy for study purposes will be issued.
A quota of places reserved for non-EU students residing abroad is established annually for each study programme. This quota may be viewed in the online database of the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) website: Places reserved for foreign students (Posti riservati agli studenti stranieri).
The requirements for admission to our degree programmes apply to all students with foreign qualifications, regardless of their nationality, with regard to qualifications awarded by both European Union (EU) and non-EU countries.
Applicants are reminded that a ‘Certificate of Equivalence’ or ‘CIMEA Statement of Comparability’ does not affect the University’s assessment of foreign qualifications for admission to its programmes.
Language requirements for admission
For access to all bachelor degree programmes delivered in Italian, certified knowledge of Italian language to at least level B2 or equivalent is required as a condition for admission. For programmes delivered entirely in English, certified knowledge of English language to at least level B2 or equivalent is required as a condition for admission. For bachelor degree programmes delivered in both Italian and English, certification of partial levels could be required as a condition for admission. Please check the language proficiency level required for the degree course in question in the Board of Studies.
Students residing abroad and/or holding foreign qualifications who wish to enrol at the University of Udine must take the Italian language test. The following are exempt from this requirement:
- students who have Italian citizenship;
- students wishing to enrol on degree programmes delivered entirely in English;
- students who have international Italian language certification to at least level B2 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference), issued by a certification body, e.g., the University for Foreigners of Perugia, the University for foreigners of Siena, Roma Tre University and the Dante Alighieri Society in Rome, Italian cultural institutes abroad and other entities. This certification may be obtained in the country of origin or at approved examination centres anywhere in the world.
Each year, the University of Udine organises an Italian language test, in line with the dates set by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR). The test is divided into two parts:
- a written test, lasting approximately 50 minutes, consisting of a placement text with multiple choice questions from levels A1 to C1 of the CEFR;
- an oral test.

Italian language courses for foreigners
The University’s Linguistic and Audiovisual Centre (CLAV) organises courses for internal and external foreign users for the purpose of improving their knowledge of Italian language. In order to enrol on a CLAV course, students must first ascertain their language proficiency level by taking the Placement Test, which serves to place them in the most appropriate course.
Please refer to the enrolment deadlines and the calendar of Italian language courses for foreigners held at the CLAV on the CLAV website – Language courses (Corsi di lingue).
