Research Project

Efficient real-time synthesis algorithms for accessible musical interfaces

The proposed research project aims to investigate and develop efficient multimodal real-time synthesis algorithms to serve as the foundation for Accessible Digital Music Instruments (ADMIs) that utilize auditory-tactile interaction for the benefit of individuals with hearing and vision disabilities. By leveraging physical modelling synthesis in order to achieve a uniform and consistent multimodal response, with a focus on vibrotactile feedback, these interfaces seek to offer a more inclusive and empowering way to engage with music.

The practical aspect of the project will focus on the design and iterative development of ADMIs using affordable technology and mobile platforms, potentially incorporating virtual/augmented reality for an enriched user experience. A key component of the project is the interdisciplinary collaboration involving caregivers, audiologists, and end-users to ensure that the ADMIs are tailored to the specific needs and preferences of people with disabilities. The project’s wider objectives include conducting experiments within musical and clinical therapy contexts and exploring the use of ADMIs in collaborative games that aim to dissolve social barriers between disabled and non-disabled participants, promoting inclusivity and shared musical creativity.
