Recommender Systems for Tailored Gamification
In recent years, the concept of gamification has emerged as a powerful tool for imparting knowledge and raising awareness about various topics, including sustainability and education. The use of game design elements such as quests and rewards in non-game contexts has been shown to be an effective method for promoting attitude or behavior changes in a desirable direction.
The empirical evidence indicates that recommending customized challenges to each user is an effective strategy for maintaining motivation and engagement, particularly over an extended period. In the current state of gamification literature, the tailoring problem is predominantly analyzed from a psychological perspective, with less attention given to the technical aspects, such as the design, implementation, and evaluation of automatic methods for personalized challenge assignment.
Our proposal is to address this gap by applying recommender system techniques, which are widely used in entertainment and e-commerce domains, as a general framework for personalized challenge assignment. In particular, we aim to define a generic and modular architecture for building tailored gamified systems, then implement and evaluate recommendation models and algorithms for personalized challenge assignment.
The ultimate goal is to combine all these results into a tool that will serve as a reference for researchers and practitioners in the gamification field.
