Curricular internships for the Master's Degree in Mathematics

The teaching regulations of the Master's Degree course provide for the acquisition of 6 CFU in an activity chosen between Mathematics Laboratory and External Internship.

The Mathematics Laboratory is an individual in-depth activity that the student agrees with a teacher from the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics or another teacher from one of the courses of the Master's Degree in Mathematics.

The External Internship represents a professionalizing training experience, consistent with the path identified within the Master's Degree in Mathematics. It aims to allow the student to apply the knowledge and methodologies learned, and to guide future professional choices. It is carried out at external private or public structures (companies, research institutions or schools), within the scope of appropriate agreements, under the supervision of an academic tutor and a member of the host structure (called company tutor). It provides for a maximum of 100 hours to be carried out at the facility, recorded in the appropriate diary booklet; a minimum number is not required. Credits are recognized on the basis of a positive evaluation by the two tutors; this is not linked to the number of hours recorded, but rather to the achievement of the project objectives.

Internship activity carried out abroad as part of the “Erasmus for traineeship” program can also be recognized as an External Internship.

Internship Procedure

  1. At least 30 days before the actual start of the internship, the student identifies the academic tutor and the facility where the activity will be carried out. The academic tutor must be a professor of the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics or another professor of one of the courses of the Master's Degree in Mathematics;
  2. the academic tutor verifies the adequacy and educational value of the project. The company tutor is identified and the start and end dates of the internship are agreed upon;
  3. if the company does not already have an agreement with the University, at least 10 working days before the start of the activity, the student requests the host entity to fill out the internship agreement (2 originals) and the company form and delivers all the documentation to the Internship Office (Ufficio Tirocini);
  4. the student compiles the training project with the help of the two tutors, who must sign the project, and delivers an original to the Internship Office, at least 10 working days before the start of the activity;
  5. after the registration of the practice, an electronic copy of the project is sent by email to the host entity and the intern, who also receives the diary booklet for recording attendance;
  6. at the end of the project, the student delivers the diary booklet, duly filled out and signed by the company tutor and the university tutor, to the Internship Office (Ufficio Tirocini). The intern and the company tutor fill out their respective questionnaires, which must be delivered by the student to the Internship Office (Ufficio Tirocini);
  7. the company tutor sends a report on the activity carried out to the academic tutor, who communicates the outcome to the Student Secretariat. In the event of a positive evaluation, this will provide for the registration of the CFU in the student's booklet.
